Real Central NJ Soccer today announced Wesley Leggett is returning to the club’s USL League Two squad for the 2022 season, pending league and federation approval. The St. John’s forward appeared in seven matches for RCNJ in its inaugural season, leading the team with four goals and assisting on another. In 2021 Leggett helped the Red Storm reach the NCAA playoffs, appearing in all 20 matches and netting three goals.
“We hope that Wesley brings what he always brings to the field, and that is his energy”, said head coach Brian Woods. “Wes offers a lot going forward, and we have to put him in the right opportunities to be successful.”
Since his youth career, Leggett’s creativity in the final third has made his game stick out amongst other forwards. He can play anywhere in the attack, is able to shift within a match, and is creative with either foot.
“Wesley was a great asset in our first season and I can’t wait to see what he’s able to accomplish this year,” said men’s General Manager Ira Jersey. “To win soccer games teams need to score goals, and Wes offers a lot going forward.”
Leggett and Woods’ relationship dates back to his youth days at MatchFit Academy. Woods is a staff coach for MatchFit, which is an RCNJ youth affiliate. The coach recently retired from his 30-year career with William Paterson University.
“I know coach Woods well,” said Leggett about Coach Woods. “He just loves to win. And that's something he constantly preaches, always trying to get the best out of his players, and getting results. He's about winning and taking the club to the next level. And he definitely can achieve that.”
USL League Two is a pre-professional soccer league that allows elite college talent to play at a highly competitive level in the NCAA off-season. League Two is known for giving players a stepping stone to the professional game.
“I see myself playing professionally,” said Leggett when asked about his aspirations in soccer. “That's the goal I've been working on since I was five. I know I can do it, and that self-motivation is constantly there. I'm always working and always pushing myself to be the best version of the player I can be.”
Leggett and RCNJ will open the 2022 USL League Two season at Philadelphia Lone Star on May 14th. The men’s will host the Ocean City Nor’Easters on May 21st for its home opener at Mercer County Community college.
“We’ve got a chip on our shoulder after our disappointing record last year,” said Leggett. “Teams need to watch out for that.”
