(Central Jersey) - The Real Central NJ Soccer (RCNJ) women fought hard against the NJ Wizards in a 2-2 draw on Sunday, June 20th. The team played well behind an incredible two-goal performance by Kayla Bertolino that earned her Player of the Match.
“We came out slow. We tried to reset and the chemistry was lacking at first,” women’s Head Coach Brian Thomsen said after the match. “We needed someone to start pressing the defense and getting forward, and Kayla was able to get it done.”
Real Central NJ started off slow, going down 2-0 in the first twenty-five minutes. Then the team started to press and were able to move the ball around the Wizard’s defense. Late in the first half, Bertolino was able to get a piece of the ball redirecting it into the back of the net from a corner kick in the forty-second minute. The women went into halftime with a lot of energy following the goal, and it showed in the second half. RCNJ continued to apply pressure and eventually was able to break through the Wizard’s defense for the equalizer. Bertolino was able to connect on a cross from Morgan Wiese with a beautiful jumping kick to slot the ball past the Wizard’s keeper.
Defensively, Real Central NJ struggled early on, making a few mistakes that ultimately led to the two goals. However, as the game went on, the women were able to understand how the Wizards attacked and began to stop any attack they faced. The most impressive stop by the defense came early in the eighth minute when goalkeeper Rachel Quigley came out to stop a 1v1 opportunity.
Real Central NJ’s last at home is on Wednesday, June 30th for a doubleheader, when the women will face off against Northern Virginia FC at 4:30 pm. RCNJ’s USL2 men will follow the women, facing Evergreen FC at 7 pm.
